Two of Málaga's most visited landmarks. The Alcazaba is a Moorish fortress with gardens you can walk through, and Castillo de Gibralfaro above it has great views over the city and the sea.

Picasso was born in Málaga and this museum holds a large collection of his works inside a Renaissance palace in the old town. Well worth a few hours.

The main city beach, just a short walk from the centre. Perfect for a morning swim or an afternoon in the sun with a cold drink from one of the chiringuitos (Beach Bar) along the shore.

A 14th-century Moorish market hall with fresh produce, local cheeses, cured meats, seafood and wines. Good for breakfast or lunch before heading out.

A waterfront strip by the port with restaurants, shops and bars. Good for an evening walk, a drink at sunset and watching the boats go by.

Two fishing neighbourhoods east of the city, known for good seafood restaurants along the beach. Try espetos — sardines grilled on an open fire right on the sand.

A Málaga classic. Waiters walk around the restaurant carrying freshly made dishes and auction them out loud - first to shout gets the plate.

The historic heart of the city — narrow streets, tapas bars and proper Andalusian character. Walk down Calle Larios, the main shopping street, which leads into Plaza de la Constitución. For a local drink, Antigua Casa de Guardia on the Alameda is a must: Málaga's oldest bar, with wine and vermouth (please try this) poured from oak barrels and your bill chalked on the counter.

Málaga's most iconic bar, in an old villa right next to the Alcazaba. The rooms are lined with wine barrels signed by celebrities — from Antonio Banderas to members of Picasso's family. Worth going for a glass of local sweet wine, a beer or some tapas.

The university area — newer and more spread out than the old town, with a good range of local restaurants and bars. A nice contrast to the historic centre. Try Boca Llena, a popular local spot with creative Spanish dishes.
